Programme Resources

The Boys’ Brigade provides a programme of activity across four different age groups with children and young people aged from 5-18. To help support our leaders on the ground The Boys’ Brigade has put together a programme for each of our 4 age groups (Anchor Section, Junior Section, Company Section and Seniors) which contain lots of ideas for activities including games, crafts, music and lots more.

Each age group has a programme pack which is the key resource for leaders working with these age groups. The programme pack contains important information about working in the BB and a wealth of ideas for games, crafts, devotions and activities to help keep your programme bright and fresh, and most importantly, fun for the children/young people and for the leaders.

Additional resources including badges, handbooks, wall charts, record of achievements, certificates, etc. are also available for each age group.

Below you can find out more about the programme for each age group:

Anchors Programme (for 5 to 8 year olds)

The Anchors Programme is all about lots of fun through games, crafts, music and lots more. The Anchors Programme Pack contains 3 zones including ‘Information’, ‘Awards’ and ‘Activity’. The ‘Information’ and ‘Award’ zones provide leaders with all they need to know about the age group, how to operate the group and the award scheme. The ‘Activity’ zone is based around 5 programme zones of ‘Body’, ‘Mind’, ‘Spirit’, ‘Community’ and ‘Creativity’; plus extra resources including ‘Programmes on a Plate’ as well as a list of useful websites/resources and key dates/anniversaries. Each programme zone is split up into topics on a specific subject (e.g. ‘Healthy Living’ or ‘Fundraising’), and each topic provides leaders with all that they need to know to lead that session. Each topic provides instructions, equipment lists, suggested group sizes, safety info as well as details on how to take the topic further with suggestions of resources (including books/websites).

The award scheme for this age group is about encouraging the children to participate in activities and do their best. It is not about meeting specific requirements, but participating in a balanced programme of activity. There are 3 badges to be gained including Red, Green and Blue.

The following items are also available to support work with this age group: wall charts, certificates, record of achievement, stickers and leader record card.

Juniors Programme (for 8 to 11 year olds)

The Juniors Programme is all about challenges, games and activities whilst exploring new activities and developing existing skills. The Juniors Programme Pack contains 3 zones including ‘Information’, ‘Awards’ and ‘Activity’.

The award scheme for this age group is specifically designed to encourage a child to look beyond themselves. Many are interested in one type of activity - perhaps sports, or natural history. Our special programme provides such interest and at the same time gently urges them to try others of a different type. The award scheme encourages a balanced all round programme - which includes spiritual and social input, as well as physical and adventure activities in 5 different programme zones. It’s not about meeting requirements, but each individual developing their interest and skills at their own rate. There are 4 badges to be gained in this age group starting out with the Target badge and moving on to the Bronze, Silver and Gold badges.

The following items are also available to support work with this age group: wall charts, certificates, record of achievement, stickers and leader record card.

Discover Programme (for 11 to 15 year olds)

The Discover Programme is all about young people developing existing skills and exploring new activities. Discover is about more than just gaining badges and provides you with the means to plan a whole programme whether or not your young people decide to try to gain an award. It's divided into three programme zones (each sub-divided into various topics) and a balanced programme draws content from each. Zones are the basic structure of the Discover programme and help group topics together, as well as provide variety in the programme. The Discover Programme zones are ‘Community’, ‘Recreation’ and ‘Skills’. There are two further zones entitled ‘Faith’ and ‘Extras’, these complement the three core programme zones and provide additional materials for devotions and lots more. Each topic provides instructions, equipment lists, suggested group sizes, safety info as well as details on how to take the topic further with suggestions of resources (including books/websites).

The Discover Programme has been designed to be accessible for both leaders and young people and the programme encourages young people to get involved in planning and running their own programme. The Discover Programme Wheel is a great way of seeing how the programme zones and topics fit together.

Badges can be awarded to recognise achievement, with the first stage being the ‘Compass’ badge and there is a then a badge for each of the programme zones (Community, Recreation and Skills) of which a level can be gained every 12 months (up to level 4). In this age group a young person can also work towards and gain major awards such as the ‘Discovery’ and ‘President’s’ badges (Please note: The President’s badge is available to order through an application form available from BB Headquarters).

The following items are also available to support work with this age group I-File Handbook, certificates and leader record card.

Challenge Plus Programme (for 15 to 18 year olds)

The Challenge Plus programme is split into Projects and Challenges.

Projects are all about young people getting involved in an activity which will last an extended period of time and will require a number of phases including planning, implementation, and evaluation. The programme has been designed to be run by young people with leader facilitating and supervising. Each Project has been resourced to provide ideas on how the project could be carried out, but also encourages young people to come up with their own ideas. The Projects are grouped into 3 programme zones ‘Community’, ‘Life Skills’, and ‘Recreation & Leisure’. Each Project has objectives, provides resourced project outlines with tips and ideas for delivery, and will provide information on how to take Projects further, including websites, books and other resources.

Challenges are focussed on activities that could be completed by the group or as an individual ranging from Climb a Munro to something very different like review a local takeaway meal. Each Challenge will be accompanied by ideas on how the challenge could be carried out and health & safety guidance.

The Award scheme consist of gaining a Bronze, Silver or Gold badge every 12 months recognising the level of points a young person achieves. The award scheme has been designed to cater for varying levels of involvement from young people during a period of their life where there are lots of pressures (exams, college, university) on them.

This programme also encourages young people to get involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The following items are also available to support work with this age group: I-File Handbook, certificates and leader record card.
